I frequently get asked about how we handle the food allergy issues at our house, so I thought, for fun, I would do something a little different and share some of the things you’ll regularly find in my fridge, freezer, and pantry!

10 Food Allergy Friendly Fridge Items

  1. Soy milk. Since we found out my daughter couldn’t tolerate dairy, we have tried many alternatives to milk. Her favorite is Silk Soy Milk (the Very Vanilla flavor). We always have a carton to use for baking and for her to drink straight.
  2. Ground flax seed. My husband and I add this to our smoothies and cereal for its heart-health benefits, but it’s also our favorite egg substitute.
  3. Dairy-free probiotics. We had to look long and hard to find a dairy-free probiotic we liked, but now that we’ve got one, we keep it in stock! My daughter takes a daily dose of antibiotic for infection prevention, so a probiotic is a must!
  4. Dairy-free chocolate. A girl’s got to have chocolate, right? My daughter’s current favorites in the chocolate category are from Enjoy Life Foods and Newman’s Own.
  5. Fruit. We have cut way back on sugary treats at our house and have replaced them with fruit. We get what’s in season and on sale, but we’re really enjoying watermelon and cherries right now.
  6. Portable fruit. We enjoy bananas, apple slices, grapes, and other fruits that are easy to carry to therapy sessions and specialist appointments, but a new favorite is something we discovered just before we left for Teach Them Diligently in Nashville. The entire family enjoys Go Go Squeez applesauce. In fact, we took some on vacation last weekend too.
  7. Gluten-free bread. Our little princess has to have bread that’s not only gluten-free, but dairy- and egg-free too. This limits our bread choices a little, but we have finally found a bread by Ener-G Foods she likes that is also budget friendly. She particularly likes the light tapioca loaf, but other “flavors” are good too.
  8. Corn NutsOf all the snack options we keep around for her, Corn Nuts is one of our daughter’s favorites. Different varieties are available. Not all flavors are safe for all food allergies, so be sure to read labels!
  9. Dairy-free butter. We live in the South, so we just can’t survive without butter! Fortunately, we don’t have to. 😉 We have tried several dairy-free butter alternatives, but the one that’s the most cost effective and readily available for us is from Earth Balance.
  10. Frosting. I always keep a can of frosting around for those times when we’re unexpectedly asked to go somewhere, and I need to take an allergy-friendly dessert so my daughter will have a treat. While I have to make all of her baked goods from scratch, I do “cheat” by purchasing store-bought icing. Our favorite is from Pillsbury and has been tinted every color in the rainbow at one time or another. (Our favorite food coloring is by Wilton. It’s pricey, but it only takes a little to tint a whole can of icing, so it lasts a LONG time!)
