Are you looking for a great book to read this summer? Andy Andrews’ book The Heart Mender: A Story of Second Chances is the book for you! Do you like history? Adventure? A good story? The Heart Mender is all of that and more!
The history buff in me immediately got lost in the story, which revolves around German U-boat activity in the Gulf of Mexico during World War II. (I had no idea U-boats were patrolling the waters off the Gulf Coast of the U.S. during WWII!)
Not a history buff? Not a problem. You’ll be entranced by the main characters. Helen, whose husband was killed in a Luftwaffe bombing raid, is a prisoner of her anger and bitterness. Josef, a U-boat officer, is betrayed by one of his countrymen, and his life falls into Helen’s hands. Both are terribly broken and need the healing that comes with letting go.
The Heart Mender is a tale of loss, forgiveness, and finding a way to live again that you don’t want to miss!
In addition to providing me with a free review copy (positive review not required), Thomas Nelson Publishers sent me an extra copy to give to one of you!
To be entered to win a free copy of The Heart Mender: A Story of Second Chances, please leave a comment by 11:59 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday, May 27, 2010. I will announce the winner on Friday, May 28, 2010.

Enter me to win a copy, please! I would love to try to read this. Maybe I’ll figure out how to fit some reading time into my already busy schedule and get some books finished soon. LOL!
Sounds like the WW II U boat stuff would appeal to me, and the relationship stuff between Helen and Josef would appeal to my wife. Maybe I could win the book and re-gift it to her. Thanks for the review Jennifer. -Richard
I like how you reviewed the book here on the blog. Good idea, and helps the person who wrote the book too. Have I ever told you I like your blogs background color? I do, it draws me in.
I am becoming a history buff – work in progress – homeschooling has opened my eyes to my lack of knowledge about history… This book sounds interesting!
Hi Jennifer,
Sounds like an interesting book. I liked your review of the book as well. It was done in an intriguing and interesting way. Place my name in the hat for the free book, too.

Sigh . . . I’m too late, but you’ve piqued my interest. I may have to check it out anyhow.
Would LOVE a chance to read his book. I have loved him since I saw him performing his comedy many years ago on The Nashville Network. Always a “clean” comedian with positive words. I’ve been following him on Twitter for quite awhile as well.
it’s too late to enter. however, a book question. i’m in the process of writing/planning curriculum for our homeschool co-op for the fall. i teach 9th literature. we’re working on american literature next year- would this be an appropriate choice, in your opinion? they are above average readers, but didn’t know if the love portion was umm.. too love-y? i will definately put this on my list to read, even if it’s not a good pick for 9th graders! thanks for the suggestion!
