A Fairytale (Or, Why I’ve been MIA from Social Media)

Once upon a time, there was a bright, beautiful Girl. The Girl couldn’t wait to start school, and Mommy was as excited as she was. Mommy had noticed some oddities as Girl grew, but others told Mommy that Girl would outgrow those things. Mommy just knew everything would smooth out when they started to work on the kindergarten curriculum because it was obvious Girl was so smart!

Mommy, Girl, and the other members of the family enjoyed the summer and joyfully launched into the school year in August. Mommy began working with Girl on her lessons and realized that Girl hadn’t outgrown those issues she was concerned about. In fact, those things were now causing frustration and difficulty. Mommy took Girl for speech and occupational therapy evaluations, and Girl started speech and occupational therapy for a mild speech delay, delayed fine motor and eye-hand coordination skills, and sensory issues.

Mommy also noticed that Girl was having difficulty with the curriculum. Although she enjoyed the weekly theme studies, the “academics” posed some challenges for Girl. Mommy changed the reading/phonics curriculum completely, which did help some. She also modified and made adjustments to other parts of the curriculum. Girl still struggles.

Mommy is spending lots of time reading, researching, talking to specialists to find the reasons for Girl’s struggles and what testing she needs now or may need in the future, and figuring out what Girl’s strengths are so Mommy’s teaching can be tailored to the best ways for Girl to learn.

Mommy is also busy taking care of laundry, dishes, meals, and lessons for Girl and her sister. She is enjoying the fall weather, laughing and playing with her wonderful children, and spending time in Bible study and prayer to get the daily refueling she needs to make it through this season.

So, as much as Mommy would like to visit with the wonderful people she has met through social media, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything right now. (Even mommies have to sleep sometime!) Mommy hopes her online friends will understand and looks forward to the day when she will be able to rejoin them for online chats again!

Jeremiah 29:11 is true. God will be faithful to provide the guidance, tools, and resources needed for Girl to realize her potential. Mommy, Girl, and the rest of the family will live happily ever after!

  1. Hi Jennifer,
This isn’t a Happy Fairytale! I’m sorry you are running into more difficulties and challenges as you determine what is the best way your little one can learn. It is frustrating but at least you know there’s an underlying reason and hopefully that eases some of the struggle. It will just take longer for her to learn and you’ll probably have to use different methods of teaching but she will get there with your help and the help of all those specialists in education out there.
Get your rest but keep up on some social contacts for your own peace of mind. That will keep you refreshed when you tackle all the challenges. That and time with the Lord!
    Will be praying.

    • No, it’s not a happy fairytale, but it has a happy ending! I can see it by faith!

Thanks for the encouragement, Janis! I’m talking to people now to see what kind of testing we might be able to get to identify where the problems are so I can tailor my teaching to her strengths. Yes, realizing there’s a problem does ease some of the struggle.

I am trying to rest, but I’m also trying to reach out so the social creature in me can stay sane! Time with the Lord is invaluable.

Thank you for your encouragement and support.

There once was a Mommy…who met another Mommy going through the same thing she was. The Mommy she met was loving, caring and truly shared Jesus’ love with others by reaching over the miles to help someone in need…that’s you, my friend. Thank you for blessing me with your friendship and being so understanding when I can’t be the friend you need in return!

    • Thank you for blessing me with your friendship too! We’ve both had crazy schedules lately. I understand!

I prayed for you all afternoon yesterday. I hope your day smoothed out!

Oh we definitely understand! You take care of you and your family. I am going through something similar with my son. Trial and error, but through the grace of God we are making it!

  4. Jennifer, It’s great to know that we all ebb & flow in life and therefore on Social Media. Praying for you and thanking God that you pray for me as well! -Sara
