Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop

Mustard Seeds

I catch myself doing that sometimes. When we’re going through particularly rough patches and then we catch a little break, I find that I’m unable to enjoy it because I’m waiting for the next bad thing to happen.

That’s not how it’s supposed to work, but when I’m feeling pressed on every side, I forget that God is the giver of good gifts. I even forget how much good I have in my life—even in the midst of a trial!

Recently I had some medical tests done, and I was nervous about the results. It turns out that everything looks good right now, but I thought about how I should trust God regardless of the test results. I shouldn’t live my life dreading the next piece of bad news that will come my way—even expecting it sometimes. To have the perfect peace the Bible talks about, I’m going to have to let go of my negativity and trust Him.

As I thought and prayed about this, some verses I memorized a couple of years ago came to mind. I remembered the gist of them but couldn’t get them word perfect anymore. That’s when I decided that they’re the next verses on my agenda. I need the reminder.

He will have no fear of bad news;
   his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
His heart is secure, he will have no fear;
   in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.

Psalm 112:7-8 (NIV1984)

  1. Jennifer, it’s a fine line, isn’t it…wondering what’s next, and trusting his plan. I am so thankful I have you to walk this journey with…you help guide me back onto his path and I pray that in some way, I too help you. You are truly my sister in Christ and I look forward to the day…that there are no miles between us!

    I am so on the same page, constantly wondering when the “next bad thing” is going to happen. Thank you so much for posting that verse, I am definitely going to highlight that one in my Bible!

    Thank you for sharing the scripture! I am highlighting it now!

  7. Wow, that is powerful! He will have no fear of bad news… I find myself waiting for the next shoe to drop often as well. Waiting for things to all fall apart – again. But when I really look back, He has never left me, even when I thought things were falling apart, so why is it so hard to trust He will still be there? Thank you for the reminder!
