Aslan’s Academy: Our Homeschool Room 2013-14

Our homeschool room hasn’t changed a lot from last year, but I have learned a lot more about what works for us to keep it organized! Here’s what our homeschool room looks like this year:

Our Homeschool Room -

(The kids decided the pictures weren’t very good last year because they weren’t included, so they inserted themselves into this year’s photos. 😉 )

The keys to keeping our homeschool room organized so that I can quickly and easily find everything and keep it functional are:

  1. Go through every book and curriculum item. I did this last summer. I packed away a few things we will use in a year or two, but I found a place for everything else or donated it to someone who might be able to use it.
  2. Bookshelves. I don’t know what I would do without lots of shelves. I wish I had a couple of more, but there just isn’t room for them, even though our homeschool room is huge!
  3. Rolling carts with drawers. Those little drawers are a great place to keep flash cards, games, school supplies, and other odds and ends that would get out of control if I didn’t have a place to keep them.
  4. Floor space. I try to keep as much floor space open as possible. The girls use their desks, the floor, the couch at the other end of the room (picture not included), and areas all over the house to do their lessons, but school room floor space is also used for craft projects, reading great books for fun, building Lego and Lincoln Log creations, and more! (Plus, I just like it uncluttered.)

I love my bookshelves. Each kid has thier own (and they know which one it is.) I also absolutely couldn’t stay organized if I didn’t have my workboxes. My space is small but each child does have their own desk with a cork board/dry erase board combo.

  2. Okay, can I come and look through your bookshelves!!! Love it!

  3. Shelby says:

Love the space! It’s very bright and cheery. I giggle because my kids always want to hop into photos that are going on my blog or Facebook. :)

  4. What a great area! Looks like lots of love learning and laughter are happening in your “classroom”!

  5. Ticia says:

I like to leave floor space also.

  6. Rebecca says:

bookshelves, baskets and floor space – those are my faves. One day, I pray I get to see it in person!

I love the name you gave your homeschool! :) We’re doing preschool at home this year. It would be nice to have a dedicated homeschooling space, but for now we’re making use of a corner of our dining room. I hadn’t thought of getting the drawers that roll – that’s a great idea!

    • Thanks, Jen! You use whatever space you have, so it sounds like you’re doing great! Those little carts really are handy. If you could pick up a couple, I’m sure it would help to keep your corner looking less cluttered because your items would be mostly out of site.
