Birthday Gifts for Jesus with Operation Christmas Child – #OCCGiving

We strive to stay focused on Jesus’s birth during the Christmas season, and we have worked on that since the girls were small. When they became toddlers and understood Christmas a little better, we began talking about how much fun it is to get gifts at Christmas, but that Jesus should get more gifts than we do because it’s His birthday. When the girls asked how we could give Jesus gifts, I read them Matthew 25:35-40 and explained that when we help others, we’re doing something for Jesus.

As a family, we look for opportunities to serve all year long, but especially during the holiday season. We’re always on the lookout for birthday gifts for Jesus. Our activities vary from year to year, but the one thing we always do is pack shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse.

Today we had our yearly family shoe box gift packing party (we’ve already packed some with a group from our church). It was a time of fellowship, joy, and excitement as we thought about the children (ages 5-9, the same age range as my girls) who would receive our gifts for Christmas. We packed costume jewelry, candy, hair brushes and headbands, small dolls, stuffed animals, school supplies, a tote bag (folded up), a small plastic cup, a toothbrush and toothpaste, pairs of socks, and more! It’s amazing how much you can fit into a shoe box! For ideas on what to pack in your box, see the Operation Christmas Child website: How to Pack a Shoe Box.

Since they made it available a few years ago, we have paid our shipping donation online with the Follow Your Box program. When you do this, you print a label with a tracking number on it to place on each of your boxes. Then, in late December or early January, you get an email telling you which country your boxes were delivered to. Since we began tracking boxes, we have had shoe box gifts delivered to Haiti and Mexico.

Do you love this program as much as we do? Act now by packing your shoe box gifts. There’s still time. Collection week ends November 19, 2012! Check the Operation Christmas Child Drop Off Locations page to find a location near you!
