It’s Christmas Eve. My children are in bed and will hopefully be asleep soon. There are a few things I still need to do before I go to bed, but in the meantime, I’m enjoying the evening.
The soft lights of the tree remind me of the Candlelight/Communion service we attended earlier this evening. I smile as I look at our Nativity (Roo’s “captivity”) calendar and see the scene complete, with the Baby added tonight before we tucked the girls in.
It has been a calm day. I got to sleep late this morning (after staying up into the wee hours preparing our Christmas food) and even lounged in bed for a while after I woke up, enjoying the girls’ chatter as they came in and out of the room. When it got quiet, one of our cats jumped up beside me, got as close as she could, and began purring.
I didn’t pet her or speak to her before she started to purr. Just being in my presence, as close to me as she could get, was enough. My heart yearned to feel the same way about God: to set aside all the hustle and bustle daily life tries to force on us, spend time getting as close as I can get, and then enjoy His presence.
He is Immanuel, God with us. Today and every day, it’s really about His presence, not the presents.
Merry CHRISTmas from our family to yours!
Sounds like a great Christmas eve.
Blessings,
