Homeschool Mother’s Journal: Field Trip!

In my life this week…

It has been a busy week! We have had several days of school, finished up the Summer Movie Clubhouse, gone on a field trip to a hands-on science museum (first field trip of the 2012-13 school year!), and made Avon deliveries together.

In our homeschool this week…

The highlight of our homeschool this week was the all-day trip to the hands-on science museum. We spent six hours there, but we still didn’t do everything and didn’t get back to some things the kids wanted to do again. The girls have been writing and illustrating what they learned and are still talking about how much fun they had!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Tired moms should go to bed earlier! (Yes, I’m preaching to myself. My bedtime is creeping earlier and earlier every night. Honestly, I’m tempted to go to bed as soon as I tuck the kids in!)

My favorite thing this week was…

It’s a tie between the field trip and getting a haircut. My hair is super thick, and I was really glad to get it cut and thinned out. It makes the humid summer heat more bearable!

What’s working/not working for us…

May I just say that I’m glad all the public schools around us are starting in the next couple of weeks? We’re trying hard to balance our homeschool lessons and end-of-summer activities. I keep hoping that we’ll be less distracted when everyone else is working on their lessons too. I’m probably dreaming, though. Extracurricular activities will start up in a few weeks!

Things I’m working on…

I’m still trying to stay a little ahead on my writing. That hasn’t been as easy this week, but I’m still ahead (not by much!). I will continue to try to stay caught up and work ahead again next week. I like that feeling!

I’m reading…

Ongoing reading projects:

  • The Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer
  • The Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer
  • Platform by Michael Hyatt (on the back burner while I get caught up on other reading)
  • 7 Tools for Cultivating Your Child’s Potential by Zan Tyler (for the second time!)
  • Bible in 90 Days
  • Educating the WholeHearted Child by Clay Clarkson with Sally Clarkson (another one that’s on the back burner for now)
  • Power Thoughts: 12 Strategies to Win the Battle of the Mind by Joyce Meyer
  • School Is Where the Home Is by Anita Mellott

I finished:

  • Serpent of Moses by Don Hoesel (review coming soon!)

I started:

  • A Sound Among the Trees by Susan Meissner

I’m cooking…

Honestly, we’re cooking as little as possible. It’s very hot and humid. We’ve been eating lots of salads and sandwiches. I recently received a recipe book that has some great recipes I’m looking forward to trying—especially slow-cooker recipes! (Those don’t heat up the house!) I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

I’m grateful for…

Provision for today.

I’m praying for…

An extensive list of things. I get overwhelmed by the needs (ours and others’) sometimes, until I remember that God is bigger than all the issues on my list!
