On Reading Wrecked by Jeff Goins

I recently read Jeff Goins’ book Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable LifeIt is full of stories that explain what it means to be wrecked, how others have been wrecked, and steps to take next. The journey from having your heart broken by the world’s brokenness to living a life of compassion for those in need is a difficult one. Jeff does a great job of explaining the process and of showing how it is realistic to live a wrecked life, including the stages a person goes through as he grows and matures.

How I Was Wrecked

Wrecked reminded me of my first “wrecking.” Unlike many of the people Jeff writes about, I didn’t leave the country on a mission trip. Instead, I took a job teaching at an inner-city elementary school when I was in my early twenties. Although I had lived across town from this neighborhood my entire life, I had not spent significant time there. The week I had spent doing a neighborhood Kids’ Crusade as a teenager hadn’t made the same impact on me as spending most of my waking hours there day in and day out.

It wasn’t working there that was the problem. It was the stories the kids told me about what had happened at their house the night before, the reasons why they couldn’t stay awake in class. It was the screams of a sick child as he ran through the halls, protesting that he didn’t want to go home (but had to go because his fever was 101 degrees). It was the smallest things, like the child who wrapped up her cookie from a special presentation to take home so she would “have something to eat later.”

These children were desperate to be loved, to be touched. I got ringworm on my forearms many times where they touched me whenever they were within reach because they wanted the physical contact.

It was these things and thousands more that proved to me over and over that I was on a mission field every day in my own hometown. It changed me.

As I read Wrecked, I could see the progression of my life in the stages he described. The choices I’ve made in life, the paths I’ve taken, are a direct result of my wrecking. I didn’t see it before, but I do now. And I am thankful.
