What Immanuel Means to Special Needs Parents

It’s Christmas Day. I have a sinus infection and bronchitis, and Princess Roo has the flu. We have put some of our traditions aside to keep from spreading the germs to others (Christmas Eve service, having neighbors over for our Happy Birthday, Jesus! party). We have simplified our meal plans because we don’t have the time or energy to prepare what we’d originally planned to eat. It’s a different Christmas, but we’ve been fortunate to spend the past few Christmases at home and healthy. I am thankful. No one is in the hospital. We are together. And there’s Immanuel.

It’s Christmas Day. I have spent the past two months dealing with a child having sensory meltdowns, more-than-normal levels of anxiety of the ASD type, lack of sleep, and illness. I’m exhausted. So when the big day finally arrives, the wrapping paper is cleared from the floor, the gift anxiety finally abates, and I can sit and think for a few minutes, I desperately need time to reflect on the Christ child whose birthday we’re celebrating.
