The first of this week has been wild. I’ve had a lot going on and ended yesterday physically and emotionally drained. I wandered aimlessly around the house, praying about what to write today. God has never failed to show me something from His Word to share, and He still has a perfect record!
Just about the time I was going to give up and go to bed, I went to turn off the lamp in the den. I noticed an odd brown spot on the lamp shade. When I got closer, I realized that the shade had been knocked sideways, and the bulb was in contact with the shade and was burning a hole in it!
Fortunately, I found that issue before there was serious damage to the shade or surrounding property, including the wall right behind that table! But I started thinking about how I get distracted by life—events both good and bad. I let my guard down and fail to cover myself and those I love with prayer. Then I’m surprised when the enemy’s attacks aren’t deflected as easily, when they strike home, and those I love end up with wounds to tend.
I know better. The Bible clearly teaches us about the armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-18, ending with
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”
(NIV1984, emphasis added)
There’s a lot at stake where my family and friends are concerned. I think I’m going to keep that lamp shade around to remind me to be alert and diligent. The enemy hasn’t gone to sleep just because I have!
