The Work of His Hands

View from the porch of our meeting room

I spent the weekend in the Ozark Mountains, awestruck by the beauty of God’s creation and with a deeper appreciation for the diversity and loveliness of my home state. As I drove the Pig Trail (yes, the actual name of the scenic byway that made up part of my journey), I had to force myself to keep my eyes on the hairpin turns. It was difficult because trees formed a canopy over my head. On one side of the road was a wall of rock, and on the other side a steep drop-off, sometimes with a creek at the bottom.

I admit that I was a little unnerved. I was traveling by myself, and the view, while breathtaking, was intimidating. I definitely wanted to stay on the road! I kept praying and reciting Bible verses addressing fear, and God saw me safely there and back.

When I arrived at the Ozark Natural Science Center, I was finally able to really focus on the beauty surrounding me. I saw butterflies, birds, squirrels, a spider or two, lots of trees, and majestic mountains. And all I could think was:

“When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?”

Psalm 8:3-4 (NIV)

And yet, He does care for me—for all of us! I am humbled and thankful.
