I have a confession to make. My family loves to watch TV. We have had a hard time tearing ourselves away from great shows since the kids were little. But if we’re going to spend time in front of the TV, I want that time to be well-spent, to have a purpose. Bible stories and character development are my top choices. VeggieTales and LarryBoy: The Cartoon Adventures were some of the first shows that met that criteria. Then I started hearing about a new series that explains the Bible for kids. I received our first What’s in the Bible? DVD as part of the swag at The 2:1 Conference. We loved it. Then we got Volume 2.
What’s in the Bible? Volume 2 Arrives
When the girls found out we were going to get What’s in the Bible? Volume 2, they were excited. I had a hard time getting the package open before they grabbed the DVDs to look at the packaging. (Yes, there’s a copy of What’s in the Bible? Volume 1 there too. Keep reading. There’s a giveaway!)
Watching What’s in the Bible? Volume 2: Let My People Go
Despite the girls’ excitement, it was a few days before we sat down and watched What’s in the Bible? Volume 2: Let My People Go (Exodus). We read the book of Exodus as a family earlier this year, so I wanted to pick a relaxed afternoon when we could all enjoy the DVD and I could really interact and discuss it with the girls.
Finally, we got our chunk of time, some snacks, and settled in to watch.
Then Phil Vischer, Buck Denver, and friends entered our home.
The Benefits of What’s in the Bible? Volume 2
What’s in the Bible? claims to be “Bible Made Easy for Kids,” but that’s not entirely accurate. This DVD series is the Bible Made Easy for EVERYONE!
I was amazed at the concepts that were taught and discussed in What’s in the Bible? Volume 2. The DVD started by explaining concepts (some I didn’t fully understand until I was an adult), including how the canon of the Scriptures was developed and what salvation, redemption, and sin are.
There’s a discussion of covenants, why sacrifices were necessary for the Israelites, and more! The stories everyone remembers from Exodus are there too: the ones about Moses and the events leading up to and through his leading the Israelites out of Egypt.
The amazing thing is that all of this is explained so that anyone can grasp the concept, and it’s interspersed with puppetry, songs, jokes, and funny skits. My husband watched it with me on another day, and even he was impressed with how much they teach—and how much fun it is! Honestly, I wish I’d had What’s in the Bible? when I was growing up.
What’s in the Bible? Volume 2: Let My People Go has it all:
- Extensive information about the Bible and important questions surrounding it
- Kid-friendly explanations that make it easy for everyone to understand the concepts discussed
- Colorful puppets and great characters
- Funny jokes and asides
- Memorable songs
- Bonus features (for even more fun!): An animated short with a great lesson about the importance of waiting, outtakes, deleted scenes with Michael (the boy in the back seat)
- And, last but not least, Phil Vischer, who does some of the teaching
I really couldn’t ask for more in a kids’ DVD. It meets (and exceeds) all of my criteria!
What’s in the Bible? is MORE than a Movie

In fact, there’s a whole page of Parent Resources on the What’s in the Bible? website that includes:

- Study guides
(These are not currently available for all eight volumes. Some are still being prepared. Stay tuned!)
